Old Photos of Bikes and Bikers

The late Russell Tozer, at one stage, owned this "late" model Yamaha 650. This was an XS650B from memory, one of the last Yamaha 650 twins produced. Yamaha, confusingly, alternated between XS and TX model names for the 650. All series of Yammy 650s were popular bikes in their day.

My own brand new Kawasaki Z650 parked next to the brand new Z1000 of Garry Albrett.

My good friend Hans was probably the most influential in my decision to buy my first BMW. This is me sitting upon his new R1100RT just before taking it for a spin. A superb touring machine.

Taking a break at the Alfredton Domain is a group of riders taking part in a Wairarapa Motorcycle Club road trial. The yellow suited person on the right is Doug Street; co-owner of Jensen and Pollet Motorcycles which I believe was Masterton's first motorcycle dealer.
It's 1978 and the XS1100 of Garry Albrett is running in. Hans Kolinko on the left, Garry centre and Johnny Cairns on right. The green machine is Hans' always immaculate BMW R60/6. My own R60/6 parked at the back.
Johnny was riding pillion this day as the Harley had suffered mechanical problems yet again.

The late Garry Albrett leans his beloved XS1100 through a bend on the Moonshine Road near Upper Hutt.Purchased new in 1978, Garry still owned the Yamaha upon his sudden death in July 2009.
Hans Kolinko stands by the R60/6, he once owned, at Southwards Motor Museum. Hans bought the BMW new and then shipped it to Australia for an around Australia solo ride in which he covered some 25,000kms in 3 months.

A bunch of Wairarapa motocycles and riders stop for lunch at McDonalds in Porirua. The riders shown are, from left, Russell Tozer, Lyn Tozer, Garry Albrett and Johnny Cairns hiding behind bike in foreground with hand inside helmet. The bikes are, from left , Yamaha 650, Kawasaki Z650, another Kawasaki I think, Suzuki GT750 and Yamaha XS750.

Stopped for a break, a smoke and a chat at the Rimutaka Summit are, from left, Johnny Cairns, Steve Edge, Russell Tozer, Garry Albrett, Christine Edge and Brent Herrick. Bikes include three Yamaha 650s, a Harley Sportster and a Kawasaki Z1000.

Not unusual to see Brent Herrick drinking from a can, but not with the usual contents this time. Rimutaka Summit.
Bryan Jones ("BJ") rotates his Suzuki T250 prior to take-off.

Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton is the setting for this shot of Garry Albrett's brand new XS1100 and my own BMW R60/6.

A gathering of members of the BMW Owners Club at Waipukurau.

Garry Albrett leaves Mcdonalds Porirua with a contented Big Mac filled body.

Johnny Cairns always turned the flame up on  his pipe as soon as the flame was turned off on the Harley.
Rimutaka Summit once more.
